Nail growth
The nail starts growing in the matrix. It hardens through the keratinization process and is less firmly attached to the nail bed (white lunula). The nail becomes thinner as it grows and again becomes more firmly attached to the nail bed.
Unlike hair, nails grow all the time. Factors such as age, diet, blood circulation and pressure on the nail itself greatly influence the growth rate.
Average monthly fingernail growth is 2 – 5 mm. Growth from the nail root to the front edge of the nail takes approximately 3 – 6 months.
Toenails grow slower – about 1 mm per month – and it takes up to 18 months to be completely replaced.
In general, nails grow faster in the summer than in winter. Also, the growth rate can be faster during pregnancy.
